Advantages of Hydraulic Pump

High power density and efficiency: Hydraulic pumps are renowned for their high power density, meaning they can generate a large amount of power relative to their size. This is particularly beneficial in applications where space is at a premium. In terms of efficiency, these pumps typically offer efficiencies between 70% and 95%, depending on the type and application.

Precision and control in operation: Precision and control are hallmark features of hydraulic pumps. They allow for fine control over movement and speed, which is critical in applications such as precision machinery and aerospace.

Durability and reliability: Durability and reliability are key advantages of hydraulic pumps. They are designed to withstand harsh environments and operate reliably for extended periods. A typical hydraulic pump has a lifespan of 10,000 to 20,000 hours under normal operating conditions.

Types of Hydraulic Pump

Piston pumps

A piston pump is a positive displacement device. In these pumps, there is a high-pressure seal that combines with a driving piston to move liquids and gasses. One of the main advantages of piston pumps is that they are incredibly versatile and can operate well under various pressure settings.

Axial piston pumps

An axial piston hydraulic pump is a type of positive displacement pump. They have cylinders assembled around a central axis (cylinder block). Within each cylinder are pistons attached to a swashplate or wobble plate.

Radial piston pumps

As its name suggests, in a radial piston pump, the pistons are arranged along the radius of the cylindrical block, which includes the pintle and rotor. The rotor powers the pistons through the cylinders and forces hydraulic fluid in and out of the cylinder.

Vane pumps

A vane pump is a positive displacement pump designed to provide the same amount of flow even as the pressure changes. This pump type usually has a maximum rotational force of 900 rotations per minute.

Gear pumps

Gear pumps have become the most common hydraulic pump type used in industrial applications today. The gear pump has fewer moving parts than piston or vane pumps, which makes it easy to service and relatively inexpensive compared to other hydraulic pumps.

Clutch pumps

A clutch pump uses a belt from a crankshaft pulley to drive itself. When a clutch pedal is engaged, the flywheel moves with a pressure plate to disengage the clutch disc and prevent the driveshaft from turning.

Application of Hydraulic Pump

Manufacturing sector: Hydraulic pumps are extensively used in the manufacturing sector for machinery like presses, conveyors, and automated production lines. They provide the necessary power to handle heavy loads, offering precise control and high efficiency.

Construction equipment: In construction, hydraulic pumps are integral to equipment such as cranes, excavators, and bulldozers. Their ability to handle heavy loads and provide steady power makes them ideal for these applications.

Mining and quarrying: Hydraulic pumps are used in mining equipment like drills and earth movers. The rugged nature of these pumps allows them to withstand the harsh conditions typically found in mining environments.

Tipper trailers: Hydraulic pumps are crucial in the operation of tipper trailers, used for transporting and unloading heavy materials. They offer high power density, making them efficient for lifting heavy loads.

Two-post auto hoists: In automotive repair shops, two-post auto hoists rely on hydraulic pumps for lifting vehicles. These pumps provide the strength and stability required to safely lift and hold vehicles for maintenance.

Forklifts: For material handling, forklifts use hydraulic pumps to lift and move heavy objects. The pumps in forklifts are designed for high efficiency and durability, ensuring reliable operation over long periods.

Parts of a Hydraulic Pump

Pump housing/casing: This is the exterior part of the hydraulic pump to protect the inner components. Smaller pumps use aluminum as the construction material and others use cast iron.

Impeller blades: The impeller blades will rotate inside the pump housing. The rotation of impeller blades will rotate the surrounding fluids and thus the fluid flow at a higher potential. Also, they play an important role in lubricating and cooling the system.

Pump shaft

The pump shaft is used to mount the impeller. Steel or stainless steel is used for constructing the shaft and the size will depend on the impeller.

Bearing assembly

Assistance for continuous impeller rotation is the function of pump bearings. Most of the centrifugal pump uses standard ball-type anti-friction bearings.

Sealings

Most of the pumps fail due to the damage of bearing assemblies. Seals will eliminate the risk of failure to a greater extent by protecting the bearing assemblies from contaminants and coolants.

Installation Requirements of Hydraulic Pump

When installing, it is required that the motor and the shaft of the hydraulic pump should have a high concentricity, and the deviation should be below 0.1 m, and the inclination Angle should not be greater than 1 degree to avoid increasing the additional load on the pump shaft and causing noise. When it is necessary to use a belt or gear drive, the hydraulic pump should be removed from the radial and axial load. Hydraulic motors are similar to pumps in that some motors are allowed to bear a certain radial or axial load, but should not exceed the specified allowable value.
